I found a manual transmission wagon with a V6 and I’m seriously considering dumping the Camry. On a more serious note, I’ve read these have issues with the pre-cats failing and ruining the engine — anyone have input on this? I live in CA so going with a full aftermarket header isn’t an option.

I have the automatic version of this car, owned since new. Nice find, I didn’t know these even came with manuals!
It’s been a great car but lately its gotten expensive to maintain. I’ve spent way more on it than on my 911 over last couple of years. The two most annoying things are the ignition coils which regularly die, and something is slowly leaking and causing burning smell.

Similar miles to my Milan and has basically the same 3.0L Duratec.
Solid motor, but it needs caring for because Duratecs are complex things. I would bet it’s a blast.

DO EET.
So long as any misfires it had were cured quickly, the cats will be fine.
Everything else on these cars is normal wear and tear stuff, pretty easy to get right. Just make sure there’s no timing chain noise.

Bad idea, as awesome as manual transmisison wagons are.
First, the wagon was only offered with the V6 over here, and transverse V6's are impossible to work on. When you need to replace the valve cover gaskets or spark plugs, usually an easy job, becomes an impossible 12-hour ordeal. You need enhanced interrogation techniques to get back there. Maybe Ted Cruz can carpet bomb his way past the intake.
For a better alternative, consider the 4-cylinder 6 hatchback.
Mazda is NOT as good as Toyota.

could be the valve cover gaskets, which are impossible to replace on a transverse V6 :(
The burning smell is oil dripping on the alternator.

Had one for 10 years ~120k (same color even) and it was a tank. Only issues were the drivers door latch (common), lost pixels in the LCD, in hatch rear seat handle stuck out, and drivers window off track. Nothing related to drivability. Near the end of the time I had it the plastics in the intake elbow cracked (NOS replacement was like 40$s), and it started to burn a bit of oil...low enough to not concern me since I was getting rid of it, significantly <1 quart between changes.

At least its not tilted back like it is in a Camry!

I’ve been avoiding the valve covers on the same motor in my Milan, but it’s not impossible - just sucks the worst set of balls you could suck.

No!

Even the I4s were tilted back. Ugh...

Fun car to drive I imagine. I had a great time driving a sedan with the stick not long ago. If it’s been well maintained, and it does look good in the pictures, I think that’s a nice price. The miles aren’t obscene.

Back in the summer of ‘04 I almost bought a v6 6 Sedan with the stick. I can say nothing to tell you not to buy it. Wish I could find one that nice on the east coast.

You can take that intake manifold off in 20 min- 1/2 hr, that adds a total hour to the procedure, it's really not bad, promise, also upper intake manifold gaskets are cheap and can prevent future vacuum leaks
